Biography:
Douglas Duane Houg was born in Farmersburg into a large family and attended grade school in Monona and Postville. As a young man he was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Houg graduated high school at Central Community in Elkader in the class of 1965. He married a girl from McGregor in the fall after graduation. Houg worked for the McGregor Electronics Company until he was drafted by the Army in February 1966. That July he started his tour in South Vietnam. CPL Houg was an infantryman with the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in the Binh Dinh Province. He was fatally wounded on December 28, 1966 at the age of 20 years old. His unit was participating in Operation Thayer II when an enemy force was encountered. A funeral service was held at the Monona Evangelical United Brethren Church and his body was buried at the Monona City Cemetery.
