Biography:
Douglas Eugene Peterson was raised in Fairfield before joining the Army. SP4 Peterson was an infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division while stationed in Vietnam. The 20-year-old was severely wounded during a fire fight on October 1, 1969. He suffered wounds in his lungs, spleen, and spine. For several days SP4 Peterson was in very serious condition. He was then transferred to Camp Drake, a Navy hospital in Japan. From Japan he was moved to Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania. After some time SP4 Peterson was brought back to Iowa City. He was a paraplegic during the final years of his life. Ultimately he died from complications attributed to his wounds on March 9, 1975. He was 25 years old at the time of his death. His body was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
