He was drafted in 1967, joined the 43rd Infantry Platoon Dog Scout unit and arrived in Vietnam in May 1968. He wrote home daily about his service and his dogs Rip and Elf. On July 14 he was killed in a fire fight in Dinh Tuong Province.
