Biography:
Douglas Ralph Hodgson grew up in Dubuque County. After completing high school he worked for the Rainbo Tire Company until he was drafted by the Army. Hodgson was inducted in Des Moines, his military record lists Des Moines as his hometown. PFC Hodgson trained as a petroleum storage specialist and he was sent to South Vietnam in January 1967. He was assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse) at the time of his death. He was wounded on May 4, 1967 when a fellow soldier was cleaning his weapon and accidentally shot him. Hodgson died two days later from his injuries. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Dubuque County and buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West.
