Biography:
Douglas Vergamini entered the Army from Council Bluffs. After graduating from flight school, he joined the 2nd Battalion, 20th Artillery, 1st Cavalry as an attack helicopter pilot based in Phuoc Long Province. His tour began in July 1969. Chief Warrant Officer Vergamini was killed June 26, 1970 when his cobra gunship was downed by enemy fire during combat at Firebase Snuffy in III Corps. He was married and was buried in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
