Biography:
Duane Olson grew up on a farm near Irwin in Shelby County. He attended Irwin Lutheran school. He enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard and served with the 2nd Battalion, 133rd Infantry. The unit was mobilized in 1968 and Olson was sent to Vietnam in May 1969 to serve with 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry. Specialist 4th class Olson was killed on June 11th in a firefight in Tay Ninh Province. He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Kirkman, Iowa.
