Biography:
A native of Sioux City, Duane Nelson enlisted in the army after graduating from Central High School. At the end of his three year tour, he “re-upped” to go to Vietnam. He was upset that so many soldiers were not anxious to serve there. His second tour began August 1965 with the 2nd Battalion, 503 Infantry in Binh Duong Province. During fighting in the Iron Triangle, he was killed when a mine detonated. Private First Class Nelson was buried Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
