Biography:
Dwayne Robert Pickart grew up in Norway, IA. As a young man he enjoyed his car and spending time with friends and family. He worked on the family farm and dreamed of returning to the farm after his military service. He was described by his loved ones as someone who made friends easily and always had a smile on his face. He was drafted into the Army and later began his tour in Vietnam in November 1968. PFC Pickart died about six months later on May 8, 1969. He was fatally wounded while on a combat mission in Quang Nam when he was hit by hostile gunfire. A funeral service and burial for the 20-year-old took place at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church and Cemetery in Norway, with a rosary also being held at his family home. Pickart was posthumously promoted to corporal.
