Biography:
Dwight Hinman grew up on a farm near Belmond in Wright County. After graduating from Belmond High School, he attended Mason City Junior College for two years and was enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa when he was drafted in 1966. His tour is Vietnam started August 30, 1967 with A Troop, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry (Blackhorse). He had just returned to Vietnam after a week of R & R in Hawaii with his wife when he was wounded on May 19th. While riding in a jeep in Hua Nghia Province, a booby trap detonated. The explosion forced the immediate amputation of two fingers. He was transferred to a medical hospital in Japan where he died on June 23rd from pneumonia secondary to his wounds. Specialist Fourth Class Hinman was buried in Belmond Cemetery
