Biography:
Edward William Knapper grew up in Eldridge and graduated from North Scott High School. As a youth, Knapper enjoyed hanging out with his friends, going to the drive-inn, and going to the local dance hall. He was drafted by the Army in November 1967. He trained as an infantryman and achieved the rank of Specialist Four. Knapper was sent to Southeast Asia in April 1968 and was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry in the 1st Infantry Division. SP4 Knapper was killed on September 9, 1968 from a wound inflicted by an enemy sniper. He was stationed in the Binh Long Province, South Vietnam when he was killed. SP4 Knapper was 21 years old at the time of his death. The young Iowan’s body was returned to the United States and buried at the Davenport Memorial Park in Scott County.
