Biography:
Eugene Ambrose Ward was born in Manchester and raised between Maynard and Fayette on the family farm. He was a graduate of West Central High School in the class of 1965. Ward was drafted into the Army in October of 1966 and began his tour in Vietnam in March of the following year. He was serving as an infantryman with a light artillery unit in the Mekong Delta area. PFC Ward was killed two months later on May 20, 1967 when he suffered fragmentation wounds from an enemy booby trap. A funeral service was held at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette. His body was buried by his parents, six sisters, and two brothers at Woodlawn Cemetery located in Oelwein. While his family tended to the funeral arrangements, local neighbors planted 70 acres of beans on the Ward farmstead. Eugene Ward was 20 years old at the time of his death.
