Biography:
Frank George Smith was born on April 16, 1950 in Sumter, South Carolina. His family then moved to Des Moines where Smith enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 in 1967. PFC Smith arrived in Vietnam on August 5, 1968. In July 1969 he took part in Operation Bold Pursuit, a search and clear mission, in the Quang Nam Province. On July 24, 1969 PFC Smith was on a patrol that encountered and engaged VC forces. During the fight he was hit by shrapnel and wounded. The 19 year old was evacuated and moved out of the country to the Navy Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan where he succumbed to his wounds six days later. PFC Smith’s remains were buried in, his mother’s home state, New Jersey at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
