Biography:
Frank Stan McCutcheon III of Des Moines graduated from Urbandale High School and went on to graduate from Iowa State University in the class of 1969. He earned a B.S. degree in metallurgy. In college he was a member of Tau Beta Phi fraternity and belonged to the American Society for Metals. He joined the Army in the fall after graduation. He received artillery training and was sent to Southeast Asia in June 1970 with the Americal Division. On February 2, 1971 his artillery firing position in the Quang Ngai Province came under enemy mortar and rocket attack. PFC McCutcheon was mortally wounded during the bombardment. He was posthumously promoted to Corporal and awarded two Bronze Stars. The 23-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
