Biography:
Franklin Daniel Schrader grew up in Jasper County and graduated from Newton Community High School in the class of 1966. Schrader attended the Wentworth Military Academy in Missouri for two years before joining the Marine Corps in March 1969. He trained as a rifleman and achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. LCPL Schrader was sent to South Vietnam in October 1969 and served in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines in the 1st Marine Division. The Newton native was killed on January 19, 1970 in the Quang Nam Province. He sustained multiple wounds inflicted by an enemy booby trap during a search and destroy mission. His remains were returned to Iowa and were buried at the Newton Union Cemetery. Schrader was 21 years old at the time of his death and left behind a newborn daughter.
