Biography:
Franklin William Picking was raised in Cedar Rapids before joining the Air Force. Picking served a 16 year career as a pilot and achieved the rank of Major. Prior to serving in Vietnam, MAJ Picking was the chief of pilot training at Webb Air Force Base, TX. In Vietnam, he served as an A-1G “Skyraider” pilot at Pleiku Air Base. He was credited with flying 35 missions in the month of May 1969. He was piloting a “Skyraider” in support of an Army division when he was shot down over An Khe, Vietnam on July 23, 1969. MAJ Picking was 38 years old at the time of his death and left behind a wife and 3 daughters. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
