Biography:
Des Moines native Frederick William Weidner was killed in action on May 20, 1968. He joined the Army and was sent to Southeast Asia in September 1967. SGT Weidner served as a Radio Operator in the 4th Infantry Division. He died when his radio relay site near the Oasis Airfield came under enemy mortar attack. He was admitted into a military hospital in Vietnam and later died from his injuries. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried by his parents at the Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
