Biography:
Gail (Sandy) Gene Sanderson of Woodbury County joined the Marine Corps in April 1968, and served with the 1st Marines Division. PVT Sanderson arrived in Vietnam on November 6, 1968. On May 27, 1969 during Operation Pipestone Canyon, he was in close proximity to Hill 55, when a barrage of 82 mm mortar fire rounds and three 175 mm lob rounds hit Hill 55 destroying a 105 mm howitzer in the Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. Three Marines were killed and twenty-nine men were injured during the attack. One of the casualties was PVT Sanderson who was killed from fragmentation wounds by the hostile mortar fire. PVT Sanderson was buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Woodbury County.
