Biography:
Gary Ladd Squiers was raised in Toledo and was the 6th Vietnam War fatality from Tama County. During high school, Squiers worked for a local grocery store. He joined the Marine Corps after graduation and trained as a rifleman. PFC Squiers was sent to South Vietnam in October 1968 and was assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines, in the 1st Marine Division. His unit was ordered to participate in Operation Linn River. The operation’s object was to sweep a ten square kilometer area south of Hill 55 in the Quang Nam Province. On the second day of the mission, January 28, 1969, PFC Squiers was killed in action. Five other Marines were killed in the engagement including fellow Iowan and platoon leader 2LT Phillip Jones. Squiers was 19 years old at the time of his death. A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Toledo and his body was laid to rest at the Haven Cemetery in Story County.
