Biography:
Gary Lloyd Hein grew up with four siblings near Tipton. He graduated from Bennett High School and was an active member of the Bennett Lutheran Church. Hein was drafted into the Army in April 1968 and was sent to Vietnam in April 1969. SP5 Hein served with the 4th Infantry Division near Pleiku. On December 6, 1969 he was killed by friendly supporting fire which was directed at an enemy force. Initially evacuated to a hospital, SP5 Hein died of fragmentation wounds to his head and abdomen. The 21-year-old’s body was buried at the Inland Cemetery in Bennett.
