Biography:
George Patrick Rogers lived in the Quad Cities when his father, LT COL Rogers, was stationed at the Rock Island Arsenal. His family moved around a lot when he was a child. He attended Draper High School in Schenectady, NY. As a youth he excelled in wrestling and in football, winning the wrestling state title in his weight class. Rogers joined the Army and graduated from officer candidate school at the Armored Force School in Fort Knox, KY in 1966. He was married and made his home in Rock Island, IL. LT Rogers was a unit commander when he was sent to South Vietnam in February 1967. He served in Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry in the 25th Infantry Division. LT Rogers died on May 7, 1967 from multiple fragmentation wounds inflicted while on a combat operation in the Binh Duong Province. He was posthumously promoted to First Lieutenant. The 24-year-old’s body was returned to the United States and buried at the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
