Biography:
Gerald Carl Kinny was raised in Dubuque in a large family with eight siblings. He joined the Marine Corps in July 1967. He trained as a rifleman and was assigned to the 1st Marine Division. PFC Kinny was sent to South Vietnam in November 1967. His unit was deployed to Hue City on the night the Tet Offensive began. PFC Kinny’s unit was ambushed on January 31, 1968. He was killed in action by enemy fire. PFC Kinny was 18 years old at the time of his death. The young Iowan was buried at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. The military listed Kinny’s hometown of record as Toledo in Tama County.
