Biography:
Gordon F. Zimmerman was raised in Sioux City and served in the Army for over 14 years when he was killed in 1970. SFC Zimmerman was serving as an armor reconnaissance specialist in the 196th Infantry, Americal Division when he deployed to South Vietnam in April 1969. His unit was participating in Operation Frederick Hill in February 1970. SFC Zimmerman and 14 other Americans were killed on February 20, 1970 in the vicinity of Hill 43 in the Quang Tin Province. Zimmerman was married and had five children, one son and four daughters, at the time of his death. The 41-year-old’s body was returned to the United States and buried at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in Texas.
