Biography:
Gregory Allan Smith was born on July 10, 1947 in Sioux City. Gregory briefly attended the University of Northern Iowa before entering the service. Warrant Officer Smith served as a member of the United States Army as a helicopter pilot. Smith and his co-pilot were killed during a crash while flying a mission near Dragon Mountain in Pleiku Province on May 20, 1971. Reports indicated the aircraft went down due to enemy small-arms fire and the helicopter erupted in a post-crash fire. His body was returned home and buried in Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City. He was 23 years old at the age of his death.
