Biography:
Harold D. Moneysmith was born in 1929 and joined the Air Force in the early 1950s. He specialized as a loadmaster and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. SSGT Moneysmith served over 16 years in the Air Force before he was killed in 1967. The Department of Defense listed his hometown as Knoxville. When he was killed his mother lived in Pleasantville and his daughter lived in Pella. SSGT Moneysmith was sent to South Vietnam in September 1966 and was stationed at the Phuoc Vinh Base Camp north of Bien Hoa in the Binh Duong Province. On July 27, 1967 the enemy attacked his base with rocket, mortar, and artillery fire. Thirteen Americans were killed during the bombardment, including SSGT Moneysmith. He was 38 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Pleasantville Cemetery.
