Biography:
Harold Lee Smith was born January 5, 1945 in Des Moines. He grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood and graduated from North High School in the class of 1964. As a teenager he worked for the Lutz Super Value and drove a 1965 blue Ford Falcon. After high school he joined the Army. PFC Smith’s tour of duty started on October 6, 1967 and he was stationed in Quang Nagi Province, South Vietnam. While on a combat operation on February 7, 1968 he was wounded in a fire fight. He was unable to be medevacked out of the field and he expired two days later on February 9, 1968. His body was returned to the United States and was buried at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. He was 22 at the time of his death.
