Biography:
Harold W. Buttz grew up in the Council Bluffs area. After high school he enlisted in the Marine Corps and did his basic training at Camp Pendleton. Before his deployment, he expressed concern to his family that he would not return home in the same manner as he left, but serving his country was something he had to do. He arrived in Vietnam on August 22, 1968 as a machine gunner for the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines. He was killed in an engagement near Khe Sanh on October 15th. PVT Buttz was buried at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
