Biography:
Henry Gretten grew up in the Albia area and joined the Army after high school. He served two years in the Army in Germany where he married his wife. His tour in Vietnam began in October 1965 with the Reconnaissance Platoon, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry. The 1st Rangers were assigned to clear Highway 13 from Lai Khe to Ben Cat. He was killed by an accidental discharge of a weapon in the barracks. Private First Class Gretten was survived by his wife and two children. He was buried in the Bethel Cemetery in rural Monroe County.
