Biography:
Howard Emerson Hanson Jr. of Cedar Rapids began his tour in Vietnam in March 1967 serving with the Army. SP4 Hanson died from fragmentation wounds he suffered while involved in an attack by Viet Cong forces trying to take a base camp near Bien Hoa. He had approximately 70 days left in Vietnam. A funeral was held at Turner Chapel West and his body was buried at Palo Cemetery located in Palo with military rites performed by the Palo American Legion. He was 20 years old at the time of his death.
