Biography:
Howard Matthew Bissen attended St. John's School in Johnsburg, MN and graduated in the class of 1965 from Visitation High School in Stacyville. He worked with his father on the farm before being drafted into the Army in June 1967. He completed his basic training at Fort Campbell, KY and advanced infantry training at Fort Polk, LA. PFC Bissen arrived in Vietnam in December 1967 and was assigned to the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. PFC Bissen was killed on January 8, 1968 from gunshot wounds sustained during battle. The incident took place in the Hiep Duc Valley, 35 miles south of Danang. Although initially reported missing, his body was recovered and returned to Iowa. PFC Bissen was buried at Saint John’s Cemetery.
