Biography:
Howard Max Cox grew up in rural Taylor County. He graduated from Bedford High School before joining the Marine Corps. While in school Cox played football. After training he started a year tour in Vietnam in August 1967. LCPL Cox was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines with the 1st Marine Division as a rifleman. He was wounded in the Battle of Hue during the 1968 Tet Offensive. LCPL Cox was evacuated to a military hospital in Da Nang where he died the following day on February 22, 1968. He was 22 years old and unmarried at the time of his death. LCPL Cox’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.
