Biography:
Howard Wayne Reece grew up in rural Shannon City in Union County. Reece was 1964 graduate of East Union High School in Afton. He attended Creston Community College before joining the Marine Corps in January 1966. He completed his training at Camp Pendleton, CA before being deployed to Southeast Asia. LCPL Reece served as a motor vehicle operator in the 1st Marine Division. He was killed on February 16, 1967 by a sniper’s bullet to the neck. LCPL Reece was transporting a colonel in a Jeep when he received the fatal wound. The 20-year-old’s body was buried at the Graceland Cemetery in Creston.
