Biography:
Ivyl Ray “Bo Bo” Bender grew up in rural Marion County near Pleasantville. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and deployed to Vietnam in May 1967. He was assigned to the 7th Communication Battalion Radio Relay and Construction Company, 1st Marine Division as a motor vehicle operator. The unit laid communication wire in combat zones and sustained very high casualties. Lance Corporal Bender was killed while on patrol during the Tet Offensive on February 6, 1968 near Da Nang at Tuy Loan Bridge. He was buried at Swan Cemetery in Swan, Iowa. His tombstone was inscribed “Silence Makes No Mistakes”.
