Biography:
Jack Hieber grew up in the small town of Battle Creek, outside of Ida Grove, in western Iowa. Sergeant Hieber joined the Army after graduation and worked his way up the non-commissioned officers list. Arriving on Christmas day, 1965, he served with B Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry. On July 27, 1966 his company was on patrol in Binh Duong Province, part of a multi-battalion sweep. Hieber was killed by a booby trap while moving along Highway 13. He was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton.
