Biography:
Burlington native James Edward Herin was a graduate of Burlington High School and Southeast Iowa College. He was a member of the Spring Grove Methodist Church and was married in June 1968. Herin was drafted by the Army in February 1969 and was sent to South Vietnam in July of the same year. SP4 Herin was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division as an infantryman stationed in the Binh Dinh Province. On October 30, 1969 SP4 Herin was killed from fragmentation wounds during an engagement with the enemy. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. A funeral service was held at the Elliot-Lunning Chapel and his body was buried with full military rites at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Burlington.
