Biography:
James Michael Gilbert was raised in Waterloo and graduated East High School in the class of 1965. He entered the service and graduated from Warrant Officer School at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA in October 1968 and left for Vietnam a month later. On May 11, 1969 pilot WO1 James Gilbert’s observation “Loach” helicopter was shot down by enemy fire while on a reconnaissance mission in Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam. Gilbert was 21 years old at the time of his death.
