Biography:
Jeffrey Alan Maurer grew up in the Wilton area and attended Bennett High School where he was a star basketball player. After graduating from Bennett in May 1961, he volunteered for Army service and deployed to Vietnam in December of that year. He served with the 75th Infantry Rangers, 1st Cavalry Division in Binh Duong Province. On June 9, 1972 Corporal Jeffrey Maurer died when a mine detonated while on patrol. One of two men to die that day, they were the last American Army infantrymen to die on the ground in the Vietnam War. Specialist 4th class Maurer was buried at Davenport Memorial Park.
