Biography:
Jerome Smith grew up in Riceville. After graduating in 1954 from high school he enlisted in the Air Force and got his “wings” in 1959. He was based in Khanh Hoa Province with the 776th Troop Carrier Squadron, 13th Air Force. On October 3, 1966 while flying a F-100 on a combat mission over Cambodia he was shot down. There was no parachute sighting and a large debris field with no visible evidence of Captain Smith. A later ground search found nothing. Captain Smith was declared Missing In Action in April 1971. In 2016 bone fragments from the area were matched with family DNA and returned. His remains were buried in Cavalry Cemetery in Riceville.
