Biography:
Jerry Allen Frakes was raised in Fairfield and graduated high school in the class of 1967. He was an active member of the local Foursquare Church in Fairfield. After school he joined the Army and was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. SGT Frakes was midway through his second tour in Vietnam when he was killed on August 16, 1969. He suffered internal injuries when the truck he was aboard rolled over during an accident. His commanding officer described SGT Frakes as “a dedicated soldier and a fine person.” He was 21 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
