Biography:
Jerry Arthur Bunn was educated in Muscatine, attending the local school district and the Muscatine Community College. In high school he competed in football, track, and basketball. He was a 1967 graduate of Sioux Falls College in South Dakota where he specialized in mathematics. Bunn was drafted by the Army in March 1967. He got married in the summer of the same year. Once in the military, Bunn enlisted in the Officer Candidate program and he received his commission in February 1968. LT Bunn’s first deployment was in Germany for one year where his wife accompanied him. He started a tour in South Vietnam in June 1969. LT Bunn served as an infantry unit commander in the 196th Infantry Brigade of the Americal Division. Just over one month into his tour LT Bunn was killed in action when his unit encountered an enemy force while on a patrol. He was 27 years old at the time of his death and he left behind a young wife and infant daughter. Bunn’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine.
