Biography:
Jerry Warner Hickerson was raised in Wayne County and graduated from Corydon High School in the class of 1966. He was active in several sports as a young man. Hickerson attended Centerville Community College for two years before he enlisted in the Marine Corps. PFC Hickerson was sent to South Vietnam in August 1969 and was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines in the 1st Marines Division. Less than one month into his tour he was killed in a friendly fire incident. On September 6, 1969 PFC Hickerson sustained multiple fatal fragmentation wounds from a friendly grenade while the unit engaged the enemy in the Quang Nam Province. The 21-year-old Iowan’s body was buried at the South Lawn Cemetery in Seymour.
