Biography:
Jimmie Foster was born in Mystic in Appanoose County in 1945. His father worked road construction for the New Deal’s WPA project but the family moved to Bettendorf during World War II to find better jobs. Foster attended Bettendorf schools and joined the Army in September 1965. He arrived in Vietnam on February 15, 1966 and became part of an armor unit with 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry. Nine days later, his B Troop was thrown into an intense fight in support of Operation Rolling Stone, part of a road construction project north of the Iron Triangle. Two American tanks and four armored personnel carriers were destroyed by rockets in the fight and fifteen Americans killed including Jimmie Lee. Private First Class Foster was buried in Rock Island National Cemetery in the Rock Island Arsenal.
