Biography:
John Darrel Skirvin was the fifth person to die from Jefferson County in the Vietnam War. He was a 1967 graduate of Fairfield High School. He was drafted by the Army in February 1969 and received his training at Fort Lewis, WA and Fort Ord, CA. SP4 Skirvin started his tour in Vietnam in July 1969. He was stationed at Phu Bai with the 148th Supply Company, 26th GS Group working as a material control and accounting specialist. SP4 Skirvin completed his entire tour, yet before he could leave he became ill and was hospitalized. He died on July 8, 1970 from complications associated with severe diabetes. He was buried at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Iowa.
