Biography:
John David Lonsdale was raised in Dale City, between Guthrie Center and Stuart, Iowa. He was drafted by the Army in July 1969 and deployed to South Vietnam that December. PFC Lonsdale served as a field artilleryman in Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 4th Artillery, 9th Infantry Division. His unit participated in the 1970 Cambodian Incursion. PFC Lonsdale died during the operation on May 8, 1970 from hostile small arms fire. The young Iowan was awarded the Siler Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart (Merit) by the Army. The 20-year-old was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart.
