Biography:
John Dewey Killen III, from Des Moines, served in the United States Marine Corps. On June 30, 1967 Killen was aboard a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter near the city of Phu Bai, South Vietnam. While attempting a tactical insertion of troops the CH-46 came under enemy fire. As the pilot attempted to put down on a nearby ridge, the aircraft experienced an in-flight fire and crashed. Although some of the personnel aboard survived, Killen and three others were never found.
