Biography:
John F. Link was raised in Ottumwa. After graduating in 1962 from Walsh High School, he attended Northeast Missouri State College for three years. He enlisted in the Army in August 1965 and trained in Special Forces. Arriving in Vietnam in December 1967, he was assigned to DET B-52, Special Forces Air Borne in Khanh Hoa Province. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for repeatedly endangering himself to rescue fellow soldiers wounded when their helicopter crashed in a hot landing zone. He was seriously wounded by mortar fire in the process and died the following day March 3, 1968. He was buried in Ottumwa Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa.
