Biography:
John Fogarty was raised by his grandmother in Council Bluffs and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and began his tour in Vietnam in August 1968 with the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines. He served as a field radio operator. Fogarty was killed in a fire fight near Chu Lai on January 25th. During the battle he maneuvered across a minefield to organize removal of the wounded. He died when he detonated a mine while carrying one of his comrades to a helicopter. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Private First Class Fogarty was buried in Walnut Hills Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
