Biography:
John “Jack” Kenneth Schmitt Jr. was born in Dubuque and attended Saint Mary’s Grade School and spent a year at Wahlert High School. He graduated from Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, or Boys Town, in Nebraska. He was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church and the Millworkers Union. Schmitt was drafted by the Army and started his tour in South Vietnam in July 1968. He was serving as an infantryman with 4th Infantry Division. After less than one month in Vietnam CPL Schmitt was killed in action by a snipers bullet on August 11, 1968. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. He was 20 years old at the time of his death.
