John Lee Reid

DeWitt native John Lee Reid graduated from DeWitt Central Community High School in 1966. As a young man worked on his family’s farm and played football. DeWitt started his Navy training before he graduated high school, he specialized as a medic. He completed his training in San Diego and was an assigned to a Marine unit before deploying to Southeast Asia. He arrived in South Vietnam in November 1967. HN Reid served with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines in the 1st Marine Division. He was fatally wounded while trying to save the lives of his fellow comrades, including a fellow Iowan from Ottumwa. His remains were returned to Iowa and buried at the Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt. HN Reid was 19 years old at the time of death.
