Biography:
John Leo Tracy was born in Mason City and grew up in Swaledale. He entered the Marine Corps in September 1967. Following training, PFC Tracy was deployed to Vietnam as a rifleman with the 3rd Marine Division. He served 90 days in Vietnam before being killed. He died on August 30, 1968 from multiple fragmentation wounds inflicted by an enemy rocket attack in Quang Tri Province. A memorial service was held at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in Swaledale and his body was buried at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockwell.
