Biography:
John Lloyd McClurg grew up in Earlham and attended Adel-Desoto-Minburn High School in Adel. He graduated high school in the class of 1969 and was drafted by the Army shortly thereafter. PFC McClurg was sent to South Vietnam in January 1970 with Delta Company, 1st of the 327th Infantry in the 101st Airborne Division. He was nicknamed “Mac” and liked by his fellow comrades. PFC McClurg was killed on August 17, 1970 in the Thua Thien Province. While being airlifted into a hot LZ, PFC McClurg disembarked from the helicopter and was killed by an enemy booby trap. He was posthumously promoted to CPL. The 19-year-old was buried at the Earlham Cemetery by his parents.
